Ski Rental for Kids: What to Book Online vs In Resort

Ski rental is the last thing to book in your trip planning — not because it doesn’t matter, but because it’s the most flexible piece and the one least likely to sell out or spike in price as your dates approach.

Book online in advance:

Even though availability isn’t usually the issue it is with accommodation or ski school, pre-booking rental online still saves real money — often 20-40% cheaper than walking into a resort rental shop on arrival. It also guarantees sizing is ready and waiting for your kids rather than dealing with a queue and limited stock on day one.

Buy vs. rent for kids:

This comes up a lot, and the honest answer depends on how often you ski: Skiing once a year: rent. Kids outgrow gear quickly, and the cost of buying and re-buying rarely beats rental.

Skiing multiple times a year: buying boots specifically (not skis) can be worth it once sizing settles, since a well-fitted boot matters more for comfort and technique than most people realize, and rental boots are rarely a perfect fit.

Things to check:

Book slightly ahead of your actual ski school start date so gear is ready and fitted before day one, not rushed the morning of. Typically in Europe, if you book Sunday to Friday, you can go in Saturday afternoon to try everything on and collect it.

Ask about swap policies – a good rental service will let you swap sizing mid-week if a growth spurt or a sizing mistake means something doesn’t fit right
